Pregnancy Care

Dr Sem assist births at Gold Coast Private Hospital. He offers continuity of care to his patients, and available around the clock for them.

He acknowledges the need for ongoing professional development and as an advanced laparoscopic gynaecologic surgeon, he also performs complicated procedures which can take hours to complete.

In those few events that he is not available, he has arrangements in place to have one of his trusted obstetrician colleagues to provide cover.

any concerns you have.

BOOKING IN FOR YOUR PREGNANCY

Once your pregnancy is confirmed, please book an appointment to see Dr Sem at around 8 to 10 weeks from your last normal menstrual period.

After the appointment is confirmed, you will receive a welcome e-mail with access details to Dr Sem’s Patient Portal website. You can provide more details about yourself and also upload your GP referral. You can also check your appointment details, fee estimates and invoices.

To be eligible for Medicare rebate, you will need a referral from a general practitioner (GP).

On your initial consultation, please bring with you:

  • A copy referral letter from your General Practitioner (if not already uploaded)
  • Medicare Card
  • Private Health Fund Card / Registration details
  • Any relevant investigations e: blood test, ultrasounds, etc.

INITIAL CONSULTATION

When you see Dr Sem first time, he will take extensive history, perform a thorough physical examination and ultrasound if necessary. He will discuss the pregnancy management plan, including timing and frequency of appointments, identify appropriate tests and ultrasounds and arrange referral to other health professionals such as dietitian, physiotherapist etc.

He will also answer all your questions and provide information relevant to your pregnancy.

SUBSEQUENT CONSULTATION

For most women with uncomplicated pregnancy, this will be every 4 weeks until 28 weeks, then 2 weekly until 36 weeks. After that it will be weekly until the baby is delivered.

Higher risk pregnancy, for example multiple pregnancy or pregnancy complicated by pre-eclampsia, will require more frequent visits.

DELIVERY

Most women will go into labour within a week of the due date.

It can be difficult to tell when labour has started but you are welcome to call the maternity ward at any time and talk to one of our experienced midwives.

Please contact GCPH Maternity before you come into hospital on 07 55 300 726.

During your pregnancy, it is important to contact Dr Sem or the maternity ward without delay if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Ruptured membranes
  • Continuous leaking of fluid
  • Premature labour prior to 37 weeks
  • Unusual or severe abdominal pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness

As always, in the event of a medical emergency please call 000.

POST-NATAL VISIT

Dr Sem will see you 4 – 6 weeks after birth for a follow up. It is a good opportunity to “debrief”, also discuss issues such as future pregnancy planning, contraception, vaccination.
