Dr. Erlich Sem is an experienced obstetrician & gynaecologist. He has over 16 years involvement in management of high-risk pregnancy, gynaecological conditions and complicated gynaecological surgery. His special interest is in complex minimally invasive (key holes) procedures including surgical treatment of severe endometriosis, removal of fibroids, ovarian cysts and minimally invasive hysterectomy, either laparoscopic or robotic.
Qualifications & Associations
Originally from Indonesia, Dr Erlich Sem completed his undergraduate education and received his medical degrees from University of Indonesia, Jakarta in 1997. He developed an interest in women’s health during his internship and later decided to migrate to Australia to further his training.
He began his obstetrics & gynaecology career working at The Women’s & Children’s Hospital, Adelaide – a busy tertiary hospital. After completing his Australian Medical Council examinations, he decided to move to Queensland.
He experienced a year working in the provincial town of Toowoomba, prior to moving to Gold Coast. He was accepted into Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists training program and underwent comprehensive training through Redland Hospital, Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and later, Gold Coast University Hospital.
Dr Sem has significant experience in management of high risk pregnancies, having worked in major tertiary maternity hospitals in South Australia and Queensland. He also completed additional training in obstetric ultrasound, working at a private tertiary Maternal and Fetal Medicine ultrasound unit.
As part of his elective training, for over 2 years he took the role of Gynaecologic Oncology Fellow at what was the Gold Coast Hospital at Nerang Street. He helped to establish the Gynaecological Oncology unit to become a well functioning and integrated oncology unit prior to transitioning to Gold Coast University Hospital. This further exposed him to complicated surgeries, both open and key holes, to treat benign and malignant conditions. He is extremely comfortable with complex dissection of pelvic structures, to safely achieve surgical objectives.
Teaching is one of his interests, and he is actively engaged in clinical teaching of medical students, registrars and advanced laparoscopic fellows.
He has been a Gold Coast resident since 2006, with his wife and two children.
He speaks fluent Bahasa Indonesia and also Malay.
Dr Erlich Sem intends to provide a continuity of care to his patients. Naturally, pregnancy and childbirth do not adhere to a strict timeline, but Dr Sem will make every effort to be there to support his patients during birth process.
There will be a time when he may be involved in complicated surgery which could take hours to complete and would be impossible for him to leave to attend a birth. In this instance, he has arrangements in place with other experienced obstetricians, who will provide cover for him.
Dr Erlich Sem participates in ongoing professional development program, and may be away for conferences or teaching sessions. Dr Sem’s business manager will be able to advise you upfront those dates.

informed decisions to achieve the best outcome.
Dr Sem has attended thousands of laparoscopic procedures and continue to teach these procedures to next generation of laparoscopic surgeons.
Dr Erlich Sem has supervised and delivered well over 1000 babies in his career, vaginally and by Caesarean Section.

First opened its doors in March 2016, Gold Coast Private Hospital is the newest health facility in the Gold Coast, offering modern and safe environment for his patients. The maternity section features five birth suites, 25 private rooms with ensuites and a special care nursery with nine cots. The unit is able to care newborn from 32 weeks gestation onwards.
The operating theatres are state of the art integrated suites, designed with minimally invasive (key holes) procedures in mind. Gold Coast Private Hospital has also acquired the latest generation of Davinci Surgical Robot, DaVinci Xi, to provide a better tool for surgeons.
